SUMMARY:Annual Drug Take-Back Day
DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:\n\n\n\n\nTwice a year the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office joins law enfo
rcement agencies nationwide to remove potentially dangerous controlled subs
tances from our nation’s medicine cabinets. The Drug Take-Back Day provides
an opportunity for the public to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused ph
armaceutical controlled substances and other medications for destruction. T
hese drugs are a potential source of supply for illegal use and an unaccept
able risk to public health and safety.\nNational Drug Take-Back\n\nThe DEA
holds the National Drug Take-Back events in April and October of each year.
 \n\n\nSaturday, April 24, 2021 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.\n\n\nThe Sheriff’s Office
will accommodate collections at three sites in the county:\n\n\nSheriff’s O
ffice Headquarters \n200 Jefferson County Parkway\nGolden, CO 80401\n\n\nMa
rshdale Elementary School\n26663 N Turkey Creek Rd\nEvergreen, CO 80439\n(I
n the round-about)\n\n\nDakota Ridge High School\n13399 W Coal Mine Avenue\
nLittleton, CO 80127\n(In the west parking lot)\nFacts About the Event\n\nT
his one-day effort is intended to bring national focus to the issue of incr
easing pharmaceutical controlled substance abuse.\n\n - The program is anon
ymous\n - Prescription and over-the-counter solid dosage medications, (tabl
ets and capsules) are accepted\n - Intravenous solutions, injectables, need
les and oxygen containers will not be accepted\n - Illicit substances such
as marijuana or methamphetamine are not a part of this initiative\n - The p
rescriptions should be removed from the original containers and placed in a
plastic bag prior to drop offMedication Disposal Drop Boxes\n\nThe Jeffers
on County Sheriff’s Office has installed four safe disposal sites for resid
ents to drop off unused or expired household medications. Secure medication
drop boxes are now available at the following locations:\n\n - Sheriff’s O
ffice Lobby, 200 Jefferson County Parkway, Golden\n - Jail Lobby, 200 Jeffe
rson County Parkway, Golden\n - South Precinct, 11139 Bradford Road, Little
ton\n - Mountain Precinct, 4990 County Highway 73, Evergreen\n\nDrop boxes
are the best option for families and individuals to safely dispose of poten
tially harmful medications. Prescription medications, over-the-counter medi
cations, and vitamins can be disposed of in the drop box. However, Sharps i
tems, chemotherapy medication, and marijuana products may not be disposed o
f in drop boxes. Healthcare facility waste is also not permitted.\n\n\nThe
average American household contains four pounds of prescription and over-th
e-counter medications. Sheriff Jeff Shrader explains “this excess of medica
tions enables opportunities for misuse and abuse, which can have very serio
us consequences. If medication is taken incorrectly or by people it was not
intended for, it could even lead to death.” \n\n\nThe Sheriff’s Office obt
ained its drop boxes through the Colorado Household Medication Take-Back Pr
ogram, administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health & Envir
onment. Medication collected in the boxes is securely packaged and shipped
off-site, where it is converted to renewable energy.\n
