BURN BAN
Effective April 7, 2020 at 10:00 AM, Park County will initiate a county wide fire ban. There are several reasons for this fire ban to go into effect.
• There have been 3 wildfires in the past 3 days in Park County
• The readiness and availability of local fire department personnel has been and will continue to be impacted by various aspects of COVID-19
• Non-Park County residents have been traveling to our areas for camping and other outdoor recreation.
• The U.S Forestry Department may be implementing a regional fire ban within the next several days.

This fire ban also means that there will be NO recreational shooting in Park County, including the Forestry areas. The only exception to this will be the Como shooting range where you will only lead bullets will be authorized. This bullet is made entirely of lead. No copper or hard-metal jacketed ammunition is authorized.

Licensed hunters in pursuit of game will be authorized to shoot firearms and use standard types of ammunition.

This decision was not made easily but only after discussion with the local fire chiefs was it determined that this is the base course of action.

Yes, we are aware that there is still snow in areas and that the forecast calls for more snow. Please be patient with this decision as there are other factors involved. Please abide by the county ordinance 19-01. Summons for violations will start at $500.00 and increase to $1000.00.

Effective April 7, 2020 at 10am

Both the Smokies on 285 still say low fire danger today.

Yes, the fire danger is low; however, there are other factors that go into calculating whether the threshold for instituting the fire restrictions has been reached. One of them: "The readiness and availability of local fire department personnel has been and will continue to be impacted by various aspects of COVID-19" is key here, as is the fact that non-residents are continuing to travel to the area to camp even though they've been asked to stay home. If there isn't a Burn Ban in effect, deputies can't write them tickets.

New York City currently has 25% of their firefighters out due to coming down with SARS-CoV-2, or having to go into quarantine because direct contacts are infected. Elk Creek Fire posted two days ago that they have a positive case among their staff. With cases expected to peak in the next two weeks here in Colorado, our resources will be stretched thin to respond to a fire so we can't continue business as usual during these times. If everyone does their part in helping to flatten the curve, the sooner we can get back to something closer to normal.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
