Evergreen Lake Connector Trail Work Starts in April -- Expect road closings and traffic delays

Expect traffic delays and detours next month as construction begins on the connector trail at Evergreen Lake Dam, which will create an accessible path between Evergreen Lake Park and downtown Evergreen.

But the two weeks of inconvenience will be worth it!

The 200-foot trail connection, a collaborative effort between Evergreen Park & Recreation District (EPRD) and the Downtown Evergreen Economic District (DEED), will provide an alternative to the steep metal stairs on the north side of the dam, so that strollers and wheelchairs can travel that stretch of the trail around the lake.


The project was funded by a $250,000 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) and a $30,000 contribution from the Evergreen Legacy Fund (ELF), plus in-kind donations of services and material. (The Legacy Fund comes from a voluntary 1 percent donation on sales of products and services at businesses to support infrastructure.)

After GoodLand Construction completes the trail, DEED will use Legacy funds to install railings.Watch for news of a mid-May celebration when the entire project is done!

Road Closings Schedule

The connector project will create road closings along the Evergreen Parkway between Upper Bear Creek and Highway 73 from April 12-23:


* April 12-13 (7:00 PM April 12 to 5:00 AM April 13) - One-lane closure
* April 13-15 (8:30 AM to 4:30 PM) - Full-road closure
* April 16 (8:30 AM to 2:30 PM) - One-lane closure
* April 20-22 (Full night-time closures for three nights, 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM) - Full-road closure
* April 23 (8:30 AM to 2:30 PM) - One-lane closure

Southbound motorists can detour onto Meadow Drive to get from Route 74 to Route 73 south toward Conifer. Residents living west on Upper Bear are urged to use Stagecoach Blvd. during closing hours.

The fishing access parking lot on the northeast side of the Evergreen Parkway at Upper Bear Creek will be closed during construction.

There is a chance weather could delay completion of the work. EPRD will post project updates and a detour map on its website, www.evergreenrecreation.com .

Due to unstable soil conditions encountered during work on the Connector Trail, Highway 74 is completely closed between Upper Bear Creek Road and Evergreen Dam, possibly through next Tuesday, April 21, while officials assess the issue and make repairs.

Jim Pokorny, a spokesman for GoodLand Construction, said workers were using heavy excavation equipment Sunday night when a crack opened in the ground below Highway 74 near the lookout across from Evergreen Dam. On Monday morning, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and representatives of GoodLand and Yenter assessed the crack and determined that it had potential to weaken the roadway, and needed to be repaired before work could resume.

It's not clear whether the crack was new or already present, but either way, it needs to be repaired and reinforced before work can resume to build the connector, says Pokorny.

The worst-case scenario is that it could take through Monday to repair, which would push the project 's timeline back by about a week. Evergreen Park & Recreation District (EPRD), which is acting as lead communicator for the project, will release a new road closures schedule later this week.

Crews were working in snow all weekend on Hwy 74 in their effort to get the roadway open as soon as possible. It will still be a few more days -- watch the EPRD website for updates! ow.ly/LRUet

On Monday, April 13 GoodLand Construction discovered a crack in the soil along Highway 74 as it was doing work on the Evergreen Lake Connector Trail Project. To ensure road stability, GoodLand brought in Yenter Companies, the premier company in soil stabilization, to create a correction plan, in consultation with the Project Design Team and CDOT engineers.

Yenter is working to shore up the road with grout, hampered by snowstorms and the difficulty of the site location. While GoodLand understands the impact of Highway 74 being closed, it feels it is unsafe to let traffic through until this section of the road is stabilized. Its goal is to finish the stabilization work, and 24-hour road closures, by the end of this week. Please check back to this page for updates on the work and when the highway will be reopened.

Evergreen Lake Loop Construction and Hwy. 74 Closure Update

The general contractor on this project is working to stabilize a slope that collapsed during the excavation of the area for bridge repairs. A section of Hwy. 74 between CR 73 and Upper Bear Creek Road will remain in full closure until approximately Friday April 24th, while the slope stabilization is being conducted. ACCESS TO LOCAL BUSINESSES WILL REMAIN OPEN FOR THE DURATION OF THIS WORK.

Once that is complete, the contractor, Goodland Construction, expects to resume work on the bridge piers. At that time, Hwy. 74 is expected to go back to the original closure schedule of closed in both directions only during the daytime hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Here is the latest update on the Evergreen Connector Trail:

GoodLand Construction says it expects to complete work to shore up Hwy. 74 between Upper Bear Creek and Evergreen Dam will be completed by the end of the week. We expect to reopen the road around 5 PM Friday, April 24, pending unanticipated construction delays.

The next phase of the Connector Trail project, concrete installation, will only require the closing of one lane westbound during off-peak daytime hours. The bridge installation is scheduled to occur during the nighttime hours on May 4. A revised closing schedule will be released as soon as it comes available.

We want to dispel any rumors about a collapse on Hwy 74. There is no collapse! Work on shoring up the road is progressing smoothly. Please spread the word!

We also want to encourage the community to patronize Lakepoint Center at the intersection of Upper Bear Creek and the Evergreen Parkway. The Center is accessible from Hwy. 74 heading south, and merchants have been suffering because of the road closure. Please make an effort to shop or dine there!

It is not just Lake Point that is suffering we are down 35% and we were in the Conoco just down the road from us and the owners said they were down 50%.

Also, have had many other businesses (owners and employees) tell us how awful the sales have been.

I hope as the construction continues that whoever is responsible for directing traffic will do a better job of it.

This project should prove to be a lesson to all before something of this type of undertaking is taken on again.

While I am sure many will enjoy the new bridge this does not help the bottom line of any business.

The next phase of the Evergreen Lake Connector Trail project, concrete installation, will only require the closing of one lane westbound during off-peak daytime hours, and will be done next Tuesday and Wednesday. The bridge installation is scheduled to occur during the nighttime hours on May 4.
