Those are SWEET!

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. Nanoparticles hit tumours with one-two punch
Using scout particles to pave the way makes drug delivery more effective.

Published online 19 June 2011 | Nature | doi:10.1038/news.2011.374

By harnessing the body's blood-clotting system, researchers have designed nanoparticles that scout out tumours and then call in a second type of nanoparticle to deliver cancer-killing drugs.

Sangeeta Bhatia, a bioengineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, and her colleagues found that using the two nanoparticles in tandem in mice increased the amount of drug delivered to a tumour by 40-fold relative to controls. Tumours in these mice stopped growing, whereas those in mice that received only one type of nanoparticle did not.

Bhatia's team was inspired by the ability of the body's clotting system to mount a huge response at an injured site. A clot forms thanks to a cascade of reactions that leads to the cross-linking of a large amount of a protein called fibrin.

The researchers designed their nanoparticles to piggyback on this cascade. "We use the body's natural amplification processes to get more drug to the target," says Bhatia. The study is published in Nature Materials.

The study: von Maltzahn, G. et al. Nature Materials advance online publication doi:10.1038/nmat3049 (2011).

And yet another method to cure cancer (I'm a little more comfortable with cDNA constructs that nanoparticles, but both will have to pass rigorous safety tests):

Human Vaccine Cures Prostate Cancer in Mice
By Clay Dillow Posted 06.20.2011

Mayo Clinic researchers and collaborators from the UK have apparently cured mice with well-established prostate tumors with no visible side effects via a new kind of tumor vaccine. And if it works for men like it worked for mice, it could make prostate cancer a preventable condition and open the door to additional cancer vaccines.

The findings are preliminary but promising. Geneticists basically assembled a complementary DNA library from healthy prostate tissue and inserted snippets of that genetic code into a swarm of viruses that were introduced to the mice intravenously. This cDNA causes the viruses to produce prostate antigens, basically sending the immune system a distress signal with the prostate’s unique signature on it.

One of the reasons the body often can’t beat cancerous growths on its own is because it can’t see the tumor cells very well, so the immune system doesn’t know where to fight its battles even as the cancer takes more ground. But those engineered viruses expressing those prostate antigens--antigens are like molecular tags indicative of a specific infection, allergen, pathogen, etc.--basically raise the visibility of the problem at the prostate.

This causes the mice’s own body to mount a serious T-cell assault on the prostate and anything foreign that might be hiding out there. So the body basically thinks it’s being invaded by viruses expressing these cancer related antigens, but it doesn’t really matter what the immune system thinks. When the dust settles, the immune system has pounded the prostate with defensive measures, eradicating the tumor cells there.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide buildup unlikely to spark abrupt climate change
June 20, 2011

There have been instances in Earth history when average temperatures have changed rapidly, as much as 10 degrees Celsius (18 degrees Fahrenheit) over a few decades, and some have speculated the same could happen again as the atmosphere becomes overloaded with carbon dioxide.

New research lends support to evidence from numerous recent studies that suggest abrupt climate change appears to be the result of alterations in ocean circulation uniquely associated with ice ages.

"There might be other mechanisms by which greenhouse gases may cause an abrupt climate change, but we know of no such mechanism from the geological record," said David Battisti, a University of Washington atmospheric sciences professor.

Battisti noted that while carbon dioxide-induced climate change is unlikely to be abrupt, the impacts of changing climate could be.

The research is published online June 19 by Nature Geoscience.

Science journalist Carl Zimmer explains how viral infections throughout history have affected the human genome, which strikingly contains more DNA from viruses than our own genes.

Viruses make up "about 8 or 9 percent" of our genome, says science journalist Carl Zimmer. Startlingly, human childbirth would not be possible without a viral mutation.

How Sun Weather Changes Affect Earth Published June 15, 2011| Space.com

Coronal mass ejection as viewed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory on June 7, 2011.

Three big factors
The sun typically follows an 11-year cycle, with periods of high activity known as solar maximums and the lulls classified as solar minimums. Currently, the sun is in an active phase of its weather cycle. [Amazing New Sun Photos From Space]

The current solar activity cycle is called Solar Cycle 24. It looks like Solar Cycle 25 could be an extremely low period, according to new research announced today at the annual meeting of the solar physics division of the American Astronomical Society.

Three things help determine the amount of energy transferred from the sun to Earth's magnetosphere: the speed of the solar wind, the strength of the magnetic field outside Earth (known as the interplanetary magnetic field) and which direction this field is pointing. The research team looked at each of these factors.

The scientists found that the interplanetary magnetic field was extraordinarily low in 2008 and 2009. This was an obvious contribution to the geomagnetic minimum. But it couldn't be the only explanation, researchers said, since Earth magnetic effects dropped in 2009 but not 2008.

Using NASA's Advanced Composition Explorer satellite, the team discovered that the solar wind remained high during the sunspot minimum in 2008. It began a steady decline later, however — consistent with the timing of the decline in geomagnetic effects.

Faith Can Creationism and Science Co-Exist? (IMHO, I say YES, Why NOT?)

Can creationism and science co-exist? This ongoing question has dominated cultural and religious circles for centuries. Across the globe, individuals and institutions continue to debate about the origins of life. While some embrace the scientific theory of evolution, others believe in creationism — the notion that a higher power purposefully formulated mankind.

This, of course, is an oversimplification, as there are individuals who embrace a variety of theories that pull from these polar opposites. The main argument at the heart of it all, though, is whether the Bible’s scriptures fall in line with scientific theory (and vice-versa).

John Lennox, a math professor and author from Oxford University is sharing his belief that creationism and science can peacefully co-exist. In his new book entitled, “Seven Days That Divide the World” Lennox maintains that Christians can believe in science’s theoretical constructs, while embracing Biblical scriptures as truths. In an interview with The Christian Post, he says:

“I think that sometimes people have been taught there are only two possibilities: Possibility one is that if you are being faithful to Scripture, you have to be a young earth creationist. Otherwise you’re an evolutionist or a theistic evolutionist, and you’re not faithful to Scripture. I don’t think that is the case…”

Summer solstice, equinox, Stonehenge and strange movements of the sun. Sixty Symbols tracks the sun's passage through the sky. Very interesting to learn how and why soltice and equinox got named and what it really means. I never knew!
