Many studies have shown that volunteering boosts mental and physical health, and Jeffco Open Space’s annual volunteer kickoff event, Spring into Service, presents a great opportunity for giving back and improving personal well-being.
Spring into Service happens Saturday, May 16 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at White Ranch Park. Activities will be available for all ages and ability levels at this family-friendly event, presented by Jeffco Open Space and the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC). In addition to the service projects, lunch will be provided, informational booths will offer tips and giveaways, and the CMC’s Bouldering Bus will be parked on-site for the enjoyment of all.
Helping repair one of Jeffco Open Space’s most damaged parks from the floods of 2013 is only one benefit of participating in Spring into Service. According to website nationalservice.gov, a variety of recent studies have shown that people who donate their time experience more social connection; lower rates of stress, loneliness and depression; decreased blood pressure; and a longer lifespan. Participating in trail work and other active service also has many physical health benefits.
Register today for the fifth-annual Spring into Service at jeffcoopenspace.eventbrite.com. The event will feature trail building, habitat restoration and historic preservation. Other activities and information include keeping dogs safe in parks, climbing aboard large earth-moving equipment, nature and history education, the Bouldering Bus, a compass station, orientation and GPS navigation, and nest-box building. The day will conclude with an afterparty sponsored by the CMC.
Jeffco Open Space was founded as a land conservation organization in 1972 to preserve land, protect park and natural resources and provide healthy nature-based experiences. We are funded with a one-half of one percent sales tax that has preserved over 53,000 acres and created 28 regional parks and 233 miles of trails in Jefferson County.
