The Bob Cook Memorial Mt. Evans Hill climb is an iconic bicycle race that takes place on the highest paved road in the United States. It was run for the first time in 1962 and has run consecutively with the exception of 3 times, so it is considered the 49th year of the event. It was renamed in 1981 in honor of five-time race winner Bob Cook, who died of cancer at the age of 23.

The starting point in Idaho Springs is about 45 minutes east of Summit County, and if you fancy yourself a climber, this is one of the “Big Kahunas” of Hill Climbs. It’s a 6,630′ of climb from an elevation of 7,500′ all the way up to 14,130.’ Climbing between 12,000′ and 14,000′ is dramatically different than climbing from 10,000′ to 12,000′ and consequently has been designated the Colorado State Hill Climb Championship for Senior Men, Women and Junior Men/Women 17-18.
