One of the potential land uses identified in the Arvada Blunn/Pioneer Master Plan study was an outdoor public shooting range proposed by Jefferson County. The Master Plan Final Report proposed locating the potential shooting range just east of Highway 93. The recommendation to Arvada City Council was to conduct noise and safety studies with public participation and input on the proposed police training facility and proposed shooting range and that those results be presented to Arvada City Council for further consideration.

Consistent with this recommendation, Jefferson County is working with a consultant to conduct a noise impact and mitigation study for the proposed shooting range. This study is expected to be completed in the summer of 2016.

Background on the Project

At the direction of the Board of County Commissioners, Jeffco Open Space was asked to investigate the feasibility of a public shooting range in Jefferson County. The Commissioners assigned this task to the organization because they felt that the Open Space group had the greatest expertise in outdoor recreation and because they had confidence in their ability to objectively evaluate this type of facility and process public input. It is not a foregone conclusion that there will be a public shooting range in Jeffco or, that if one is developed, that it will be on Jeffco Open Space land. The current process is to evaluate the feasibility of a shooting range including needs, locations, costs to develop and operate, environmental concerns and many other considerations.

This project has also engaged a public involvement process. A working group was formed to study this issue that is comprised of various interests and areas of expertise. All of these meetings were professionally facilitated by Jeffco Mediation Services and open to the public to monitor and make comments. This group issued a report to the Commissioners in July 2014.
