The Sheep Mountain 50 throws everything it has at runners, challenging you from start to finish, among the mountains and hills lining the western slope of the South Park Valley. Runners looking for a wilderness experience, stunning views, opportunities for technical terrain mixed with remote forest service roads… will fall in love with this course. The second race of our Fairplay Series of runs, The Sheep Mountain 50 promises to provide runners with an unforgettable experience that celebrates the history and humble nature of this mountain region.

Course Details:

UTMB/ITRA: This race has been evaluated and certified by the International TrailRunning Association. It is a UTMB Qualifier worth 4 Points.

COURSE: The course starts and finishes at the Townof Fairplay Beach in Fairplay, CO. The course takes runners southeast of Fairplay on a combination of forest service roads and singletrack trails. The course is a lollipop loop where the first and last 14 miles of the course are shared. The remaining 23 miles is comprised of one major loop over and around Sheep Mountain, Sheep Ridge and Round Hill. The western edge of the loop comes very close to the Buffalo Peaks Wilderness Areas, offering runners some of the most isolated Ultrarunning in our state. Download Course Description

AID STATIONS: There will be 7 aid stations on the course totaling 9 aid stops. Each aid station will be fully stocked with water, electrolyte drink, and assorted “Ultra” snacks. Four Aid stations will have drop bag access, which you will be able to access a total of 5 times.

CREWS AND PACERS: Due to access difficulty in the area, there will be crew access ONLY at two (2) aid stations. Crews can attend to their runners 2 times on the course between these two stations.

No Pacers Allowed

Parking: All runners and spectators must park at the designated parking locations ONLY. We ask that you NOT park on Main Street, Front Street or 4th Street in Fairplay. PLEASE ONLY PARK IN DESIGNATED AREAS. A map of these areas will be available closer to the race.

Pre-Race Check in: Packet and bib number Pick-Up will take place from 6-7:30pm at Town of Fairplay Town Hall; and again on race morning from 4:30 AM – 5:30 AM at the Town of Fairplay Beach. All runners must check-in with race staff the morning of the run by 5:45AM. Runners not checked in by 5:45 AM will not be scored as official runners of the event.

We’ll also have a fire at Town Hall from 6-8p. Please BYOB and Bring Your Own Camp Chairs.

Pre-Race Briefing: Friday Evening at 7:30pm at Town Hall in Fairplay, CO.

Post-Race Celebration: There will be a post race gathering at the Town of Fairplay Beach. We’ll welcome all of our runners to the finish line with food and drink.

Awards: All official finishers will receive a unique finishers award. We’ll also present special awards to DFL, Best Blood and a few surprise awards as well.

Permits: This event is being held in accordance with permits from the USFS Service Pike National Forest – South Park Ranger District, Park County, The City of Fairplay, Bureau of Land Management, and permission from our local private land owners. We ask that you please respect and care for the land this event is held on to help ensure the future of this race and to limit our environmental impact.
