Volunteer with Your Family to Restore and Protect Elk Meadow Park Dog Off Leash Area!

BACKGROUND:True to its name, Elk Meadow Park is the most likely place in the Open Space system to view herds of elk. The meadow is prime grazing ground for the largest of Colorado’s native deer, as well as where mountain bluebirds flit and red-tailed hawks circle the sky hunting for rodents and other prey.

The Elk Meadow Park Dog Off Leash Area is an extremely popular destination for visitors and their four legged friends. Most visitors are good stewards who pick up after their dog and keep their disturbance to a minimum. Unfortunately there are some visitors who leave pet waste in the park, which has a detrimental effect on water quality as well as plant and wildlife habitat downstream.

Volunteers will help beautify the park by helping to restore trails and cleaning up pet waste. There will be activities for kids ages 6 and up throughout the event as well.

TRANSPORTATION: Lower the overall carbon footprint of our volunteer effort. Participants will have the opportunity to coordinate a ride to and from the project with other volunteers. Volunteers will park at the Mammoth Lot, just off of I-70 and will then be shuttled to the park.

REQUIREMENTS:

• NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED. Our staff will be onsite to guide you through the day’s work flow
• Be in good physical condition
• Be able to use a variety of tools, including shovels, picks and rakes
• Volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian
• Be prepared for numerous and changing environmental conditions
  
  

WHAT TO BRING & WEAR:

• Closed-toe, sturdy shoes are required. No open-toed shoes or sandals of any kind will be allowed.
• Work gloves
• Plenty of water (2 quarts minimum)
• Raingear
• Sunscreen and insect repellent
• A day pack
