Boreas Pass Railroad Day is coming!!!
The big news this year is the return of an operational steam locomotive to the Como Roundhouse, steamed up and able to run. Probably no rides this year, but soon. Ride the hand cart while checking out the new railroad track!
DSP&PHS and South Park Rail have been laying track between the Como depot and Como roundhouse.
Visit the Como school house, pioneer homes, depot, roundhouse, and hotel. Head up Boreas Pass and visit the Section house and other structures on Boreas summit. Head on over to Breckenridge for continued fun where The High Line Railroad Park will also have special events.
Boreas Pass Road is only open in the summer months. It's dirt and winds 19.5 miles from Como to Breckenridge at an elevation of 10,000-11,400 feet between Pike and White River National Forests. Once a Ute trail, it then became the nation's highest narrow-gauge railroad.
On Boreas Pass Railroad Day, Forest Service volunteers will staff the top of the pass, Baker Tank and Rocky Point. Volunteers will give cooking demonstrations of what the hardworking railroad men ate in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
