Painting Canada: The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson with Karen Lindsay
The Group of Seven, also known as the Algonquin School, was a group of Canadian landscape painters active from 1920 to 1933, originally consisting of Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A. Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald and Frederick Varley. Believing that a distinct Canadian art could be developed through direct contact with nature, the Group of Seven initiated the first major Canadian national art movement. We will study the biographies and the paintings of each of the original artists.
OPTIONAL: The class will conclude with a long weekend trip (paid for separately) to Toronto May 3-6, 2018 to see the actual original paintings in three Toronto museums.
