April 5, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM – Lightning, Hypothermia and Altitude Sickness

Lightning

How dramatic it is, but do you understand the causes—and signs of an imminent strike? What should you do when in the backcountry and lightning approaches; more importantly, what you should not do?

And a general discussion of the various signs and symptoms of the most common illnesses encountered in the high country:

  • Hypothermia – the four primary causes. Can I really get hypothermic in the summer?

  • AMS—Acute Mountain Sickness

  • HAPE – High Altitude Pulmonary Edema

  • HACE – High Altitude Cerebral Edema

What is "high country?" Signs and symptoms of these illnesses – are they the same or different? Who is susceptible? How long does it take to acclimate? Treatment.

These are important topics to know as you enter springtime in the Rockies.
