Is your Neighborhood participating?
National Night Out is a campaign involving citizens, law enforcement agencies, fire departments, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials. The campaign strives to strengthen neighborhood spirit and law enforcement/community partnerships.
Started in 1984, National Night Out sends a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting crime together with law enforcement. In addition, it helps neighbors get to know each other and have fun doing so.
This year National Night Out is Tuesday August 7th. Events are usually held that evening between 6 and 9 p.m. in local neighborhoods. You can host a 2018 National Night Out event in your neighborhood. Consider a block party or ice cream social, a barbecue or pot luck dinner. Some neighborhoods host the get-together in cul-de-sacs, nearby parks, school ball fields or rec centers.
Representatives of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will attend your event to answer questions that your neighbors may have. This is a great time for the Sheriff’s Office to exchange ideas with your neighbors concerning effective strategies for fighting crime in your neighborhoods and to hand out giveaways.
