The Jeffco LWV Nonfiction book will open its 2020-2021 season in September with two uniquely timely books on racism. We encourage all of you, club member or not, to read either or both. They address the controversial topic of racism, which has captivated our country in recent months: what’s some of the history behind it, and what we can do about it.

Every reader of either book, club member or not, is welcome to join one of two Zoom discussion sessions, Wednesday, September 16th, at 1 pm or Saturday, September 19th at 9:30. To receive a link to one of these sessions, please email Marilyn Brown at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with your choice of session. Just prior to your desired session you will receive your link and a brief reminder of Zoom logistics, including the procedure we will follow.

The two books for September are: Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom, by David W. Blight, and How to Be An Antiracist, by Ibram X. Kendi. Blight’s book, through its focus on the life of Frederick Douglass, reviews the history of slavery and the abolitionist movement.

The Kendi book is a manual on racial ethics, based on the relatively young black author’s own evolution of thought. His basic thesis is that we must understand the policies that resulted in inequality before we can modify them and make them antiracist.

Frederick Douglass was published in 2018 and is 746 pages in length;  How to Be An Antiracist was published in 2019 and is 238 pages in length.
