Youth Mental Health First Aid - For Adults Who Work With Youth

About this Event

Event Description:

This program targets individuals who live, work, or volunteer with youth between the ages of 12 to 18.

Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics discussed include common mental health challenges that one could experience, such as depression and mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, and substance abuse disorders.

From Your Instructors:

Thank you for your interest in the Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) program. YMHFA is an 8-hour course in-person (6 hours virtual) being offered by the Worcester County Health Department (WCHD). The goal of YMHFA is to strengthen people’s skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Evidence shows that the program builds mental health literacy and helps those in the general public to identify and know how to respond to mental illness.

By registering for this class you are agreeing to:

• Complete the self-paced, self-guided course work that is required for you to be eligible to attend the live instruction;

• To be present and participate in group discussion;

• Remain on video during live instruction; and

• Respect the opinions of the other individuals attending the training.
