About Us:

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. Consisting of nearly 59,000 volunteer members, CAP serves the nation and local communities through Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs, and Emergency Services. Born in the days just prior to World War II, CAP now flies the world’s largest fleet of Cessna aircraft and conducts 85 percent of the inland search & rescue missions for the Air Force. CAP volunteers and aircraft also actively support local, state, and federal agencies in disaster relief and response.

Based out of Centennial Airport, the Black Sheep Senior Squadron (CO-162) of the Colorado Wing is one of the largest senior squadrons in Colorado. We offer diverse opportunities for pilots and non-pilots alike who are passionate self-starters looking for volunteer opportunities to serve. The national web site for Civil Air Patrol (gocivilairpatrol.com) describes in more detail who we are and what we do to execute our mission.

Black Sheep Senior Squadron is one of seven squadrons in the Greater Denver Area of the Colorado Wing. It is comprised of strictly senior member adults. Other squadrons include: Cadet squadrons comprised mostly of youth 12-18 years old and composite squadrons that include both cadets and senior members.

Black Sheep members are both pilots and non-pilots who execute and support our emergency services mission in search and rescue, fire watch, disaster relief, and other missions tasked or approved by the U.S. Air Force. Our flight crews are typically made up of a Mission Pilot, a Mission Observer, and a Mission Scanner. Other positions we fill include Incident Command Post staff, urban direction finding crews, and public affairs. While Black Sheep does not have cadet members, we do support our cadet squadrons with flight experiences and aerospace education opportunities. All squadron members select one or more areas of opportunity that prepare them to support the various functions of the squadron. Training is provided at little to no cost.

It is important to emphasize that no aviation experience is necessary to join Black Sheep as a valuable contributor. Contribution is paramount! CAP provides a highly rewarding and fun experience and continually develops members in this serving profession.
