Presenters: Mark Gardner and Rex Rideout
From 1821 to 1880, the storied Santa Fe Trail was a route of commerce and conquest—and music. With a unique collection of vintage instruments, historians Mark Lee Gardner and Rex Rideout will explore the various forms of entertainment experienced by Trail travelers as derived from diaries, letters and newspaper accounts. Their program, a tribute to the route’s bicentennial, will also touch on how the Trail has endured in the popular imagination.
