Hike the St. Mary's Glacier trail (3/4 mile to the top - 1.5 miles round trip) to watch the FULL MOON rise over Yankee Hill. Hike up at dusk. Hike back down by moonlight (or flashlight). Be prepared for snowy conditions on the trail. Microspikes/Crampons/Yaktrax are advised. The trail is heavily used and is usually packed down pretty well, so can be slippery. (See the discussion closer to the day of the hike for updated weather and trail conditions.) Parking is available in private lots near the trail head for $5. TIP: If you drive past the trailhead first, the small parking lot on the left is a little closer and the walk to the trailhead is much flatter than parking in the large parking lot. BRING EXACT CHANGE. It's a self-pay station with an envelope that you'll need to fill out - so allow extra time to deal with that. Meet at the trail head at 5:10pm (a 5-minute walk from the parking lots) for the FREE hike. Dogs are welcome on a leash. It's always colder at the glacier, so plan accordingly. (This event is weather-dependent. If the sky is cloudy, the hike will be cancelled and announced on this page.)
