Antarctica, that remote, mostly ice-covered continent, is most accessible during the Austral spring and summer, which correspond to our fall and winter. During that brief period, scientists from all over the world arrive to study the climate, geology, biology, ecology and physics of the seventh continent. The results of their research appear in scientific publications, popular news articles, and films and videos that provide a glimpse of this still largely unknown part of the globe.
Ed Furlong, an Evergreen Audubon Board member, Chapter Meeting program organizer, and recently retired U.S. Geological Survey scientist, will provide a glimpse into environmental science research in Antarctica, based on his experiences establishing research sites and collecting samples over a two-month period in Antarctica’s McMurdo Dry Valleys. This presentation will highlight the day-to-day life of an earth scientist working in a remote and challenging environment.
USGS. Since retiring, Ed has expanded his volunteering with Evergreen Audubon. He serves on the board, organizes our monthly chapter meeting presentations, manages the wood purchase and preparation for our annual nest box build, chairs The Dipper Project, and most recently, he has been leading beginner bird walks. Ed is pleased to be sharing a singular and very influential experience in his scientific and personal life with his Evergreen Audubon community.
