Announcing Wild Aware’s “Wildlife, Wine & Song” September Benefit Concert

When you ask Evergreen locals what defines our community, many will say it’s our elk herd. Got elk? Protecting our elk and local wildlife is the mission of Wild Aware, a local nonprofit organization.  You are invited to Wild Aware’s third fall benefit concert, “Wildlife, Wine & Song,” on Thursday, September 14, 2023, from 4:30 pm – 8 pm at Center Stage Theatre, 27608 Fireweed Dr, Evergreen. This event is another big step toward community awareness for Wild Aware and its mission to enhance the positive and rewarding coexistence between humans and wildlife in our area.
The nonprofit organization, Wild Aware, was founded in November 2019 by Christie Greene, a long-time Evergreen resident and former Colorado Parks and Wildlife volunteer. Wild Aware is fast becoming a household name as local residents see the good works this young organization of dedicated volunteers is accomplishing in our community:

Wildlife Watch: As elk calving season ends at Evergreen Lake and around our community, the weekend volunteers who educate lake visitors to stay out of harm’s way from aggressive cows protecting their newborns, are trained Wild Aware volunteers. Volunteer training will again take place at the end of the summer when elk rut season begins and Evergreen Lake becomes a spot for male elk and their rutting.

Barbed Wire Removal: Volunteers will work in Dedisse Park to rid the former ranch land of decades-old barbed wire. An additional barbed wire program is underway to help private property owners remove unwanted fencing or help adapt any fencing including decorative fencing to avoid dangerous interactions with wildlife.

A new Bear group: With the newest program underway, volunteers will educate themselves and the public about our local bears' fascinating, hidden lives and their habits and how to safely and intelligently coexist with them.

Road Aware: The colorful signs in yards across the community asking people to slow down during elk calving and rut seasons are Wild Aware's efforts. And, the phone call to *277 to report any injured wildlife has been promoted throughout our community with Wild Aware’s helpful postcards. Wild Aware's original mission to mitigate wildlife-vehicle collisions continues as strategies are researched to further eliminate these accidents.

Wild Aware continues to search for the most effective ways to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions. To help fund these projects, Wild Aware is hosting its third fall benefit concert. Following the success of last year’s benefit, Taos musicians Michael Mandrell and Jenny Bird are back by popular demand. A silent auction will feature a flight over the Front Range, a kayak adventure, and up to two holiday weeks in a Mexican resort community with many restaurants and activities to enjoy including golf and snorkeling.
