A New Wild Aware Program Hopes to Make Locals Bear Smart

One can expect to see bears living in the area from August until November. That’s because bears have entered hyperphagia, a biological need to feed in dramatic amounts before they go into hibernation and then into a den for the winter. Connie Ning, an Evergreen altruist, bear advocate, and aficionado is hoping to educate her community about bears and reduce unfortunate bear encounters. She intends to do so through a new book club she is starting. Connie will offer like-minded, bear-loving folks in the community a fun way to learn more about these amazing furry neighbors and how to prevent harmful interactions between humans and bears. Under the umbrella of local non-profit Wild Aware, The Wild Aware Bear Book Club will have its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, at 5:30 pm in Connie’s home, 33424 Deep Forest Road, Evergreen. Dr. Ted Ning, Connie’s husband, will be the group’s first speaker. Connie realized her love of bears after reading the book, “In the Company of Bears: What Black Bears Have Taught Me about Intelligence and Intuition,” by Benjamin Kilham. Connie said, “The book made me realize how intelligent bears are, how they live in family groups even though we usually see lone bears, and how truly amazing they are.” Are you bear smart? Through books, movies, and engaging with expert speakers, Connie’s wish is to spread knowledge on how to peacefully and respectfully coexist with these apex predators. It isn’t common knowledge that bears are naturally shy and wary of people and other unfamiliar things. Connie suggests that participants joining The Wild Aware Bear Book Club be prepared for an enjoyable, enthusiastic evening. Participants are asked to bring a dish to share.
