The Farolito Lighting & Pinecone Ceremony is a wonderful way to kick off holiday festivities. A unique alternative to the typical tree-lighting ceremony, Tesoro Cultural Center reenacts holiday traditions of the 19th century by lighting farolitos – paper bags filled with sand and illuminated with candles. Each year, an honoree is chosen who has “lit the hearts and minds of us all” in our community, and this individual will turn on the holiday lights and farolitos.

Join Tesoro as we usher in the holiday season and honor a member of the community who has enlightened the hearts and minds of others. Feel the warmth and watch as pinecones are tossed into the courtyard fire, sending good thoughts and prayers into the night sky. Sing along to Christmas carols from the 1830s and 1840s provided by musicians and singers under the direction of Bob Klimek and other strolling musicians. Enjoy Mexican hot chocolate, hot cider, and traditional biscochitos.

This year's honoree is none other than our Board Chairman, Jeremy Kinney. Jeremy was one of the founders of SCFD, and was Chair of Opera Colorado in the 1980’s. He was the one who encouraged Holly to buy The Fort, and supported her creating Tesoro, all these years. Without him, Tesoro wouldn’t have happened, and none of us would be here. The Fort may not be here. He has made many contributions in our many communities we serve, and he has served. He truly has lit the hearts and minds of so many and very much deserves this award.

We invite you to feel the warmth and watch as pinecones are tossed into the courtyard fire, sending good thoughts and prayers into the night sky. Sing along to Christmas carols from the 1830s and 1840s and enjoy Mexican hot chocolate, hot cider and traditional biscochitos.
Admission to this event is free. We encourage you to dress warmly, as the event is held outside.
