Each December, Evergreen Audubon joins birders across the Western Hemisphere in one of the most beloved community-science traditions—the Christmas Bird Count (CBC). This year marks our 58th annual count, covering a 15-mile-diameter circle that extends from Robinson Hill Road on the north to just south of the Brook Forest Inn, and from near Echo Lake on the west to the bottom of Kerr Gulch on the east. Evergreen’s CBC is one of about 2,500 counts held annually across the Americas-and one of roughly fifty in Colorado.

How to Participate

On count day, we’ll head out in small field teams to identify and count as many birds and species as possible within our circle. Everyone is welcome–new and experienced birders alike!

• You can participate by:
  Joining a field team led by one of our Area Leaders
• Counting birds at your home feeders as a Feeder-Counter

Feeder-counters have made a huge difference in our results in recent years, helping
us reach record-breaking totals.

If you can’t attend the meeting, simply register below, and a CBC Coordinator will contact you with details. Returning participants may also reach out directly to their previous Area Leaders. Feeder-counters from prior years will be contacted to confirm participation.

The Tally Rally Potluck

After a full day in the field, we’ll come together for one of Evergreen Audubon’s favorite annual events–the Tally Rally Potluck. Enjoy a traditional chili supper along with your favorite appetizers, sides, and desserts as we share the highlights and tallies from the day.

A Legacy of Discovery

Each year brings new surprises t o our count. Over the past decade, we’ve recorded
remarkable highlights:

• 2014: Snow brought down large flocks of Pine Grosbeaks and Cassin’s Finches
• 2015: Mild weather helped us set a new record with 57 species
• 2016: “The Year of the Juncos” – 2,171 counted
• 2018: Another milestone year with 58 species
• 2019-2020: Trumpeter Swans and record-high participation during the
  pandemic
• 2022: New species—Pacific Wren
• 2023: Record turnout with 86 field participants, adding Lewis’s Woodpecker and
  Lapland Longspur

This year, we’ll again be watching closely for Mountain Chickadees and Pygmy
Nuthatches-two species for which Evergreen has proudly held world-record high
counts.
