Celebrate our nation’s independence on one of Colorado’s most spectacular 14ers, Capitol Peak! This four-day backpacking project provides you with the opportunity to work as part of a small group of volunteers performing valuable trail maintenance and restoration work. On day one, you’ll meet up at the trailhead and backpack about 5 miles before setting up a backcountry camp near timberline. On days two and three, you’ll hike past Capitol Lake and up toward the Capitol-Daly saddle to help construct trail features (rock check steps, retaining walls, etc.) to keep this section of the ascent trail in good condition and to prevent negative impacts to the surrounding alpine tundra. Return to camp each evening to enjoy the views of Capitol’s knife-edge ridge and the camaraderie of your crewmates. You’ll pack up camp and hike out on day four.
When: Thursday, July 3 through Sunday, July 6
Project type: Overnight backpacking, trail maintenance
Food: CFI will provide all food from lunch on Thursday through lunch on Sunday.
What to bring: CFI will provide a full packing list of necessary equipment, including your own backpacking gear (backpack, tent, sleeping bag, etc.).
