It's easy enough to get lost in the woods if you fail to pay attention and especially if you start doing circles. I suppose the best advice for those inclined to not pay attention is not wander off the trail so far you can not see it. As a geologist I never get lost in the field, I only take the long circuitous rout for entertainment. lol
Me and three girlfriends got lost on a hike many years ago when we were camping with other families near Golden Gate State Park. I decided to go last minute when they were getting ready to leave for a short walk (is that sort of like a three hour tour?). We were not prepared and none of us knew what we were doing. We missed a mark and then wandered around for about 3 hours. We even found an old abandoned road at one point be did not know where we were. Right before we found our way out I started getting pretty scared. It was one of those stupid things you do without thinking and the whole time my head was telling me I should not be doing this but I ignored it. I grew up in the mountains and I know I should always be prepared. We didn't even bring enough water and none of us knew the area. Ever since then I have been meticulous and careful. And harp on others about doing the same. Every year there are so many deaths in the mountains from stupidity and sometimes you only get one chance. I was lucky.
I would get lost even with all the gizmos mentioned and turning around. I need to mark my way so I can get back out. I get lost with a GPS on roads, hence my nickname "GPS" in the motorcycle club.
So, mark your trail. I carry a bunch of little rags and take them down as I'm returning and hope no one else came by and took them down.
READ & LEARN, before you go out, KNOW WHAT you're doing.
Got nothing for those that get lost, BAD JUDGEMENT & PANIC.
Not knowing the basics IF you do get lost, IF you don't know them don't go out. PERIOD, quite WASTING more of taxpayers $$$$, or the S&R team charge these folks FULL PRICE, for being dumb!
TPP, cairns are for marking. I'm not going to stop hiking just because you don't want me spending taxpayer dollars. I have my card to cover search & rescue.

That's harsh. People make mistakes. Unless you are perfect none of us are in a position to criticize. Someday we will need to turn to another for help as well.

That's a great thread, I'm sure it'll come in handy for lots of folks!
"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
