A severe thunderstorm warning means that a severe storm has been officially reported or has been detected on radar for that county. Thunderstorms are classified as Severe when wind speeds reach in excess of 58 mph or when 3/4 inch or larger hail has been reported. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are also issued for the estimated doppler radar equivalent of severe hail and winds. Heavy rain and frequent lightning are NOT technical reasons for Severe Thunderstorms, although they usually accompany strong storms. Please remember that straightline thunderstorm winds can have the potential to be more devastating on a larger scale than tornadoes because of the larger surface area these storms can effect. Severe storms can deposit softball size hail and straightline winds in excess of 120 mph. Take Severe Thunderstorms Seriously!
