Scorpios Need Not Apply: Zodiac Signs Inspire Job Bias

Everyone knows (or should know) that it's illegal for businesses to discriminate against people because of their gender, race, religion and other things, at least in the United States. But what about rejecting an applicant based on their astrological sign?

According to a job listing in the Chutian Metropolis Daily newspaper in Wuhan, China, a language training company there is seeking qualified applicants — as along as they're not Scorpios or Virgos. The Toronto Sun reported that Xia, a spokeswoman for the company, said that in her experience Scorpios and Virgos are often "feisty and critical."

There are extremes with every sign, and while us Scorpios can be feisty and critical, we can also be some of the hardest workers there are!

If you could, would you hire, or not hire, someone based on their astrological traits? Have you found that the incompatibilities with your sign tend to be true, or are they too general and non-specific to really apply? (I've never paid attention myself).

We are also very loyal and I would not be biased towards astrological traits ("too general and not specific"). However I have been involved with using what is termed as personality trait exams to determine how an individual would fit within a current group of employees.

I once had an interview for a lab job where I was grilled by the guy whose lab my soon-to-be-boss was sharing space with (while our new lab space was being emptied) - he couldn't have cared less about any of my skills/qualifications, he was only concerned with how well I'd get along with him, my new boss (his former assistant researcher), and his 10 other lab members while we were still sharing his lab areas (this guy had 3 rooms, an entire hallway essentially, at UCSF, where space was a PREMIUM, so mind you I wasn't even going to be in the same room as him and everyone else). It was my introduction to how important it was to get along with co-workers - up until then, I'd assumed that everyone went in, worked hard, and were generally civil to each other while we worked on common goals. While this guy whose space we were "borrowing" had some interesting personality quirks that made this a priority subject for him, it was a lesson I never forgot in terms of managing professional relationships from then on out.

Asian culture grooms people to be followers- good little sheep and good little communists. This is true in China- and it's generally true in Japan as well.

While these cultures are very good at grooming people to follow orders- it puts the kabosh on creativity and innovation by discouraging people to make their own path.

An example of this is the Japanese culture- while they are great at making electronics smaller- they are not as good at innovating new technology. This is because they are raised to be sheep and follow the leader instead of becoming the leader. These cultures promote being a team player- and this does not always jive with the Scorpio mindset.

The same in China where they are great at duplicating technology that was invented in America- their culture and the way they are raised in society keeps them from groundbreaking innovations.

This is where they run a foul of Scorpio's. We tend to be leaders & innovators. We are perceived as hard headed- but I don't think it's hard headedness- it's that people who know their way don't need to be led by a leash.

Scorpio's know their way- they are the hardest workers- and they are very loyal. One thing about a scorpio- if you betray them, they will not totally forgive you. They will never completely trust you again.

It's easy to get along with a scorpio- just do everything their way!

Bill Gates is a scorpio.

I remember when taking my first personality trait exam, it turned out that the work they thought was going to be for me would have been boring because it was not diverse enough and they were worried I would have left anyway :) The exam was online and it was a 50 word list, where it was necessary for me to select on a scale of 1 to 5 as to how each word related to me. After the results were in, it was just amazing how closely it did resemble my personality traits. When we were reviewing the results back at the office, one week later, I started to laugh and could not stop, to the point that he also started to laugh! It turned out we left on good terms and we each realized that the position would not be a fit and to this day we still stay in contact!
