What's up with Home Depot cards???

First I should say that we generally don't shop at Home Depot. We prefer the smaller, local folks. But today we did go there because my husband wanted to do some rearranging in the garage that involved buying some heavy shelving and we knew that the Depot would have exactly what we wanted in stock and ready to go.

When we got to the checkout the cashier asked us if we had a Home Depot card and of course we don't. But on the idea of saving $25 I thought what the hey, let her sign us up. Even if we never used it again the minute or two would be worth the discount. Then she asked for an SSN "for identification - you can use your ssn if you buy something and don't happen to have your card with you" WTF????!!!! We NEVER give out our ssn and so that was the end of that - I coughed up the extra $25!

Are Home Depot's corporate folks that moronic??? They can't use a phone number for identification?

Okay, I feel better! </rant>

I don't remember that part, although I'm sure we probably did give it. But we filled out the big application at the customer service desk because we were making a big purchase so I'd expect to do that there, rather than the quickie approval at the register.

Something to keep in mind with opening accounts like this is that it will affect your credit score - the company will do a credit check and that will ding you, so if you are trying to improve your score for whatever reason, then don't open new credit card accounts. If you do get one, also keep in mind that closing it may affect your score as well, as it will change the total amount of credit that you are approved for. If it has no balance, it is actually helping you (unless you have to pay an annual fee even if not using it, which Home Depot doesn't do) by decreasing your outstanding debt to available credit ratio.

Considering it's only a one-time discount, I always ask myself if it's worth it for the down-the-road hassle. Whatever you do, make sure you are checking your credit reports on a regular basis (annually if not more frequently)!

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

I can see that for a big purchase. But this was represented by the cashier as simply a discount card - supposedly akin to a King Sooper card. In hindsight I think it may have actually been a store credit account. That's the only reason I can see for asking for that information.

Oh well! We didn't bite so it doesn't matter.

Your SSN is being used to run a credit check.
