PINE JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Park County District Attorney has decided not to file embezzlement charges against former employees of the Intermountain Humane Society, citing a lack of evidence.
"It's over 10 percent of our yearly operating budget," said Steve Kelsey, the current Intermountain Humane Society Board President. "There is a suspect. We have documented evidence."
But the Park County District Attorney, Thom LeDoux said a criminal investigation into former shelter staff came up short on evidence, especially concerning more than $14,000 in missing adoption fees.
"Based on insufficient accounting practices, we weren't able to determine who took the money or how much money was taken," said LeDoux.
"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther
The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
I can't say too much about all this because I don't have both sides of the story but this was the most interesting part to me.
"I would invite anyone who wants to come in and review the records and take a look at what we have," said Kelsey. "It's in black and white."
It seems to me from where I am sitting, this board has been way more transparent than the last. I had heard reports that the last board was asked several times for financials and the board refused several times.
The DA found what I have said all along in this...IMHS did not have a "robust" accounting process at the shelter, having different folks coming in and not following basic accounting rules. Because of this, there is no proof of any illegal activity. We live in a country where you must have proof.
