I thought of Rockdoc while reading this, as he is a big fan of Steve Jobs, and I think would appreciate this article. There are a lot of really cool insights not quoted, and a list of 10 Quick Creativity Hacks if you're stuck.

How To Be Creative
The image of the 'creative type' is a myth. Jonah Lehrer on why anyone can innovate—and why a hot shower, a cold beer or a trip to your colleague's desk might be the key to your next big idea.

Creativity can seem like magic. We look at people like Steve Jobs and Bob Dylan, and we conclude that they must possess supernatural powers denied to mere mortals like us, gifts that allow them to imagine what has never existed before. They're "creative types." We're not. But creativity is not magic, and there's no such thing as a creative type. Creativity is not a trait that we inherit in our genes or a blessing bestowed by the angels. It's a skill. Anyone can learn to be creative and to get better at it.

Interestingly, Mr. Beeman and his colleagues have found that certain factors make people much more likely to have an insight, better able to detect the answers generated by the superior anterior temporal gyrus [aSTG]. For instance, exposing subjects to a short, humorous video—the scientists use a clip of Robin Williams doing stand-up—boosts the average success rate by about 20%. Alcohol also works. Drunk students solved nearly 30% more of these word problems than their sober peers.

What explains the creative benefits of relaxation and booze? The answer involves the surprising advantage of not paying attention.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

Isaacson's recent offering (Aspen Institute) clearly to me indicates creativity is inate - not learned.....period. Scully was a Jobs understudy for years (East Coast shirt - sodaw water manager ) and he destroyed Apple in short order.........he was smart but a creative VOID - as in GM imploded VOID. Jobs came back and sheer creativity remade Apple into a half-trillion $$$$$$$ company......he suffered fools NOT and was a perfectionist. Jobs was flawed but IMHO without him Apple will slowly become a drone IBM or Dell
yuck.

Creativity is mostly about being afraid to look stupid with your ideas. Many people are afraid of stating the creative ideas that they have and mostly the inate part of it is just about being bold and letting people know about your creative ideas. Our schools are squelching this by the way they are teaching our children.

"Why don't we get the best out of people? Sir Ken Robinson argues that it's because we've been educated to become good workers, rather than creative thinkers. Students with restless minds and bodies -- far from being cultivated for their energy and curiosity -- are ignored or even stigmatized, with terrible consequences. "We are educating people out of their creativity," Robinson says. It's a message with deep resonance. Robinson's TEDTalk has been distributed widely around the Web since its release in June 2006. The most popular words framing blog posts on his talk? "Everyone should watch this."

If you are not prepared to be wrong then you’ll never come up with anything original.

One of the best ways I found to be creative in small companies is to just independently go ahead and develop something, design it, build it or modify it and demonstrate it. It happens all the time. Once it is demonstrated it gets more attention and is more likely to succeed. Can't really do that in large companies, you would get in trouble for working on something that is not an official approved budgeted project.

If you want to be, press one. If you want not to be, press 2

Republicans are red, democrats are blue, neither of them, gives a flip about you.
