As bad as the land might look and how long it will take to come back, it does in the cycle of life. And if they had aspen more than likely while the grasses, bushes and flowers are growing so will stands of aspens.
Too many trees choke out the bushes, grasses, flowers and aspen, all foods for the wildlife.
As for where to store treasures, some places are subject to wildfires, others tornadoes, hurricanes, flooding, etc.

All so unecessary.
I'm not a historian, but I caught a whiff of it in the article as well as your post... what did he do that was so wrong financially?

I am thankful that Andy Hoover is here. It looks like, from what I have learned, that he and Lucas and others shared their information about building fire resistant homes, especially for that part of the area which was not as accessible. Without huge winds the homes might have survived it.
He has also been a good spokesman for the Lucas family and the Appels. We have so much more to learn. Perhaps he will share more of the kind of things he did to make his home fire resistant.

It would be interesting to compare the insurance rates for similar homes at similar prices in different areas.
Flood plain?
Earthquake zone?
Coastal hurricane area?
Tornado belt?
Most insurers won't cover flood zones, right? One of my coworkers used to live on a farm in the flood plain, and they expected to be flooded once every three years. Not until he moved to the city, did he realize most homes don't have interior high water marks on the wall.
Essentially what I am saying is every place has it's own dangers. We have owned our place since the early 70's and only had 3 close fires, Hayman, Topaz Mountain, and another just last year, not too bad a risk in that many years, the closest was 2 miles, but the farthest was 20 miles.
Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.
Ahh Topaz Mtn. Is it in the Lost Park Wilderness area? The one that had a controlled burn months before that reignited?
And it makes me wonder how long it will be until insurance companies no longer insure those areas.
