So my Kindle bit the dust. Instead of the blue screen of death, horizontal and vertical lines obscure the screen making it unreadable. It is a failure of the e-ink which can happen from a variety of reasons including pressure on the screen. That was not the case with me as it was working one night and failed the next morning. The device was 2 1/2 years old, so was out of warranty. Amazon rep offered half price on a new one ($65). While I was happy with the Kindle, I am looking into the Google Nexus 7. It is getting great reviews. The 8 gig model goes for $199 while the 16 gig model goes for $249 (backordered several weeks). It is a 7 inch tablet with a very good form factor. It is wifi capable (not 3G). The only down side is the lack of memory expansion or memory card. However with everything going on the cloud, for that price point, that is not a dealbreaker.
Anyone have experience with the Nexus 7?

Mine also bit the dust this last trip....and for good reason. The pup knocked it off the dashboard of our RV onto the floor, where it was promptly stepped upon by the guy who had just fixed the windshield, he was filling out the paperwork inside. Not his fault.....The Kindle was past it's prime anyway, more than 2 years old. I didn't want even a small tablet....I like the e-ink because I do most of my reading outdoors, especially in the summer here (and in the winter in AZ) reading a backlit screen in sunlight isn't much fun. I didn't even think about calling Amazon about it....
I opted for the Kindle Touch 3g/wi-fi, I do like being able to download books with or without wi-fi. And, I have a lot of books on my old Kindle/Amazon that have not been read yet. I can definitely buy/download books faster than I can read them. But a lot of them were free or less than $1. I didn't want to lose them.
Isn't it a shame that electronics gadgets are always past their prime in only two years? Such a waste really. Portable products do take a beating though, in the normal course of use.

Yes that's true technology wise, it's a durability issue too. I think the LCD screens are fairly temperature sensitive too, don't like cold temps. My Laptop is probably close to 10-years old, a dinosaur but I keep using it.

I have a clock/alarm/thermometer that I bought in Hong Kong about 30 years ago. Except for the alarm it still works fine and I swear it goes 10-15 years w/o replacing the battery.
I was actually pretty impressed with the durability of the Kindle (I checked and it was actually almost 4 years old) I have used it hard in those years......dragged it all over the country, dropped it, spilled on it, and more than once sat on it......but then I did have a cover on it. I guess the 200 lb dude was just too much for it. Interesting the screen did not crack, but the display has a huge white area where nothing registers. I don't feel bad about replacing something that has given me years of good service.
I tweaked a new Kindle while in Mexico and Amazon replaced it free. Same issues as the bars like the OP.
The Kindle Fire is nice to have to, but I keep the Kindle mainly for reading outside and I also love the way you can go so long without a charge. Awesome for vacations.
