I had 13 cousins - and only 5 of them are reasonably healthy, independent, and happy.

The rural Alaskan fishing village is a very different place from the towns that tourists visit.

My family's village can be reached by barge (twice a year) or by plane - that's it.

There's only a few dozen people there in the winter ( which includes the post-master, the town medic, the town teacher, and the town marshal --- all paid to be there).

Family members used to bide their time hunting and fishing - but the state's rules have limited that.

No need to fret, though - the federal government flies in food weekly.

These days, the guys just sit around and drink, smoke pot, screw their girlfriends when they're happy - and beat them when they're not.

The Savage nodded and said, "I ate civilization."

Getting back to the halibut --- thinking a fresh fish dinner would be great --- halibut fillet stuffed with crab meat.

Yessum deedy, living in the bush can have all kinds of effects on the mind. I hear ya about the regs on hunting and fishing. Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if non-residents didn't abuse it. Just an opinion, but at a quick glance I can tell you the salmon is being bashed to hell by non-resident commercial fishing and the wild salmon populations are slowly being polluted with genetically insufficient hatchery (farm grown) salmon. I have strong opinions about non-residents partaking in the hunting and fishing up there if you can't tell. Again, living in the bush can have some harsh effects on people's morals and personality, but I'd like to sit and think that most of them are good people. Sucks about wife beaters. They shouldn't be doin' that, and the ladies takin' it should leave, but there's a lot of different circumstances that can prevent both of those things. ::sigh:: Alaska isn't for everyone, especially RURAL Alaska. I like your quote by the way.
Yes, getting back to the halibut. Although it's really expensive, I think maybe next month I'll head down and get some from an Asian fish market that sells seafood CHEAP. Wish I could remember it, I'll ask my wife and post back. This place is awesome. As an example, I saw over one pound lobsters being sold for like seven dollars a pound...live. Yea.... :faint: Man I'm lookin' forward to that. Either way, when I get back up 'home' again I'll catch some wild stuff. Thanks for keeping the thread going BB (and homeagain), it's nice to see another person with Alaska history other than KodiakJack and homeagain. Personally though, I like to wrap the halibut up in tinfoil (NO HOLES!) with a bunch of butter and a slice of lemon and slow cook it on the grill. When done, plenty of scalloped potatoes, corn on the cob and garlic bread to accent it! Double :like:

Without editing my last post, I'd like ta say that whenever I read the Unalaska (Dutch Harbor) Police Blotter on The Anchorage Daily News, there's nothing but calls for drunken @$$wagons in there. What a head shaker. People should drink more n.a beer and less wiskey! I know I should.

ON TOPIC: Hey, I found that market I was telling you about!: Pacific Ocean Int'l Marketplace 2200 W Alameda Ave
Denver, CO 80223 Phone#:(303) 936-4845 Web: http://www.pacificoceanmarket.com
I guess there's one out in Broomfield, but everyone says this one is nicer. I don't really pay attention to "decor" cause I'm not a sally. I really enjoyed the one and only time I went down there and recommend it to everyone. There's another market I've never heard of, Viet-Hoa I think? Anyway, hope this gets you interested in buying some halibut, when I get paid at the end of the month I'm there dude.
