Elk Creek Fire holds Wetdown Ceremony for New Engine

Conifer Mountain Station receives New Fire Engine

Conifer, Friday, March 7, 2014

This Sunday, March 9, 2014, 12:00 noon, Elk Creek Fire Station 3, at 10956 Timothy's Drive, Conifer, Colorado will take delivery of a new Type 3 Fire Engine. When the new engine arrives, the old engine it is replacing will "wet it down." After being anointed, Elk Creek Firefighters will push the new engine into its bay and put it into service.

A wet down ceremony is a fire tradition dating back to the horse drawn pumpers of the 1800’s. When a department received a new pumper, it and its team of horses would be ritually washed at their newly assigned firehouse and backed into the firehouse bay.

After the ceremony, there will be station tours and BBQ for the firefighters and guests.

Thanks Michael Davis for keeping this thread on topic. Maybe some day more people will believe in Elk Creek and start making tax deductible donations again considering your disasterous posts as PIO regarding the last requested tax increase. Maybe the Chief should continue to make posts or a different PIO?

Yesterday was one of those clear, gorgeous, spring-like winter mountain days, the kind that make you get outside and then pause often, taking in the beauty of your surroundings, feeling content and blessed. But it was special for more than just the weather; we celebrated the official arrival and commissioning into service of a brand new fire engine for Elk Creek Fire Protection District at Station 3 on Conifer Mountain.

According to Captain Jacob Ware, the Wetdown Ceremony dates back to the 1800s. A new fire engine is washed and dried, then pushed back by the firefighters into its new bay to be officially commissioned into service. The community is invited to participate, for this engine will take care of them in years to come.

What made this day, and this ceremony so special, was the long effort by many to bring this to fruition. After decades of lack of funding increases, the 1st mill levy in 40 years passed allowing the purchase of new equipment and more to help bring the community's fire department up-to-date and better able to serve in emergencies. Conifer Mountain will now have its own dedicated engine, with a solid local volunteer crew standing by to respond when needed.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

Thanks for the pix. How many people other than firefighters showed up for the event? There were a number I know that boycotted it thanks to the good works of Michael Davis.

Never mind I got an email. Apparently a miniscule turn out considering the number of residents in the district. Unfortunate that we as taxpayers get to pay for all our firefighters standing around who get credit for being there toward their hours for the month which goes towards their pension.

Elk Creek still has a huge amount of work to get the support of their district behind them.

I believe the Majority of the district did show their support and it was shown that the district is behind Elk Creek when they voted to pass the mil levy increase for Elk Creek. Doesn't get more black and white than that. If you are talking about yourself than I think we can all agree that Elk Creek doesn't need the negative support that you give and are better off without it.

Great post, Kassk20! Trying to equate Elk Creek's support with the number of civilians who showed up vs. the outcome of the recent mil levy election is a fool's errand. Let's face it. Some people can find fault with anything.
