CONIFER, Colo. Winter is here, which means wildlife has to search for their food a little bit harder than normal. Helping the wildlife by feeding them human food could not only put you at risk but the animals as well.

"People may mean well, but those who feed deer do more harm than good," said Conifer Colorado Parks and Wildlife Officer Scott Murdoch.

When deer and elk search for food they normally spread out. Artificial feeding encourages them to crowd together making it easier to spread disease throughout the herd. If there are large gatherings of deer in the neighborhood, that could attract mountain lions' as well, putting people and the lions at risk.

To report incidents of feeding or other illegal wildlife activity contact a local Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer.

Birds especially seem to be vulnerable to disease outbreaks when fed together.
