homeagain wrote: Netflix has some REALLY good programming.......I'm watching it and NOT the political posturing that
will be occurring until JANUARY.
It also has some horrendous programing, like "Cuties." They keep trying to justify something that seems to be intended for perverts and pedophiles.I will never give Netflix a penny.
MINDS AND PARACHUTES ONLY FUNCTION WHEN OPEN.....I tried posting a link to the DIRECTOR'S
explanation of HIS purpose for making the film (unfortunately it is behind WashPO paywall)
THE basic foundation of his film deals in REAL LIFE experiences of young FEMALES who are Facebook,
Instgram,SnapChat,ALL of social media....and they are DESPERATE for acceptance....the route to
acceptance is thru likes...so-o- they ALL ATTEMPT to portray a highly sexual version of THEMSELVES,
they are young and have NOT formed their own identities. His research was based on ANY 12 y.o.s daily
life on social MEDIA...one of the characters (from a foreign country) has to "take in" the idea that her father
can have another wife...living with her mother and her....so does NOT know how to deal with this "concept"
and seeks other ways to understand it. The HARDCORE TRUTH is extremely hard to watch, BUT that is the point, THIS IS THE REALITY of our society that puts HIGH VALUE on looks, sexuality, the younger the child, the MORE impressionable.
The child beauty pageants, altho not so graphic, are just as damaging and damning....LOOKS ARE THE
GOLDEN KEY and if U take the "adult" makeup off AND the adult attire...you have a vulnerable victim.....
I do NOT believe the general populace truly comprehends the terrible trauma that is encountered on
social media (for YOUNG children,AND older teens)
Thank you for the recommendation HappyCamper, it looks like it's right along the lines of what I've been saying too - left un-regulated, social media is causing more of our social ills than it is helping improve them as was originally envisioned.
Social Media Is the Problem No social media, no collapse of American public life.

Back in 2011 Chamath Palihapitiya left Facebook and said of his former company, “It literally is a point now where I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works.”
Keep in mind that was 2011. Which we now think of as a lost Golden Age.
I’m here to make the case that all modern social, political, and sociological ills can be traced to social media. It is single-handedly responsible for the tearing apart of our social fabric which Palihapitiya so presciently predicted. It’s not “part of” the problem. It is the problem: An insidious malware slowly corrupting our society in ways that are extremely difficult to quantify, but the effects of which are evident all around us.
Though a tangent, I have to chime in that the Cuties documentary, while maybe created with good intentions to shed light on a serious problem, I detest how they filmed it and promoted it; it's counter-productive and harmful in that it will entice pedophiles to watch for the wrong reason. I think Netflix should've listened to that feedback rather than doubling down on their support behind it.
Beauty pageants, dance programs, and anything else that sexualizes children, I find repugnant and reprehensible. It should all be done away with.

Hitler did wonders for the German economy, sorry that he had to kill millions of Jews.
Netflix has put out child pornography, plain and simple. I realize that you are childless and do not as a result have grandchildren (your posting on another thread), watch "Cuties" and tell me that it is non-exploitive of pre-pubescent girls.
I will wait for your reply.
SC,
Evidently you think that Netflix is social media. It is a multi-billion dollar corporation. The principle of the company is now creating a "teacher's retreat" in Bailey. I wonder whether they will view "Cuties" at their seminars?
Sigh. No, I do not think that Netflix is social media and nothing I said states or implies that. Netflix is showing a documentary on social media about the dangerous impact of social networking, I agreed with that premise and provided a link that discusses that elsewhere.
I have to say, this isn't the first time, and it's getting really old having words put in my mouth and assumptions made about what I believe. Can we all not do that please? It's a huge turn-off to even wanting to have a discussion.
