The One Real Reason You Are Stressed Out, Overweight, Depressed or Angry
by Brian W. Vaszily
April 5, 2006

If you are stressed out, overweight, depressed, or suffering some other disease ... If you are in debt, in a mediocre to horrid relationship, you despise your job, or you hate those Democrats or Republicans ... I am going to tell you what the true underlying cause is. And how to overcome it.

But you won't believe me.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill

So interesting, ScienceChic. And from the article:

Brian W. Vaszily wrote: You have been tricked into them. Conned. Suckered

He goes on, tho

Brian W. Vaszily wrote: I do however want to add an even more important point: you are a good person, with good intentions. You deserve good. Corny or kiss-up as that may sound, you'll also come to see that that is why I'm writing this column. (You'll also realize it's why you can be conned.)

I loved how he points out the marketing influences in our lives

Brian W. Vaszily wrote: You are overweight, in debt, depressed, stressed, or sick because it is incredibly beneficial for certain other people to make and keep you that way.

And lastly

Brian W. Vaszily wrote: In a previous life I participated in this predominant form of marketing, and rather well. But now that I realize how widespread, disgusting and devastating its impacts are -- how it is by far the most deadly plague of our time -- I am going to give all of our secrets away to you. Some may seem obvious upon hearing them, others will shock you.
Knowing these secrets, you'll be equipped to rise above the manipulations. You'll finally be able to prevent and cure what is truly the root cause of your illness, sadness, anxiety or anger ... and you'll be able to choose to live a much healthier, happier life.

I really enjoyed the article and since nobody really believes they can be manipulated, including me, I'm going to be much more aware. BTW, do you read many articles about persuasion?

charm, I've read some. There are tons of books out there (I have several on my Amazon Wish list to get to). I was first introduced to this concept while in college with a presentation by Jean Kilbourne on her analysis of women in advertising called "Killing Us Softly". She's since put out a few more additional lectures on this topic, updating her material as it has changed since she first started researching it. Here's her Part 3 of the series - the rest are easily found by Googling if you are interested in more!

Here are the books on my list to read, not to say that they are a comprehensive example, or even the best out there (I know there's a classic one that I'm missing), just the ones that have caught my eye and made me want to learn more:

Does anyone else have books on this topic to recommend?

Yes, Science Chic, I was also. Thank you for the video.

The reason I asked about persuasion is because it is the opposite of personal conscientious thought (or at least is the effort to influence another's thoughts.) One is internal the other is an external force.
"Persuasion is a form of social influence. It is the process of guiding oneself or another toward the adoption of an idea, attitude, or action by rational and symbolic (though not always logical) means." (from WikipediA)
"Conscientiousness is the trait of being painstaking and careful, or the quality of acting according to the dictates of one's conscience. It includes such elements as self-discipline, carefulness, thoroughness, organization, deliberation (the tendency to think carefully before acting), and need for achievement. It is an aspect of what has traditionally been called character. Conscientious individuals are generally hard working and reliable. When taken to an extreme, they may also be workaholics, perfectionists, and compulsive in their behavior. People who are low on conscientiousness are not necessarily lazy or immoral, but they tend to be more laid back, less goal oriented, and less driven by success. (also from WikipediA)

Here are the books on my list to read, not to say that they are a comprehensive example, or even the best out there (I know there's a classic one that I'm missing), just the ones that have caught my eye and made me want to learn more:

I've read or read excerpts of many of these books, and appreciate the list you put together. And I have several on Persuasion as well.
Thank you SC, you always put together such thorough posts!
