A walk down memory lane

HEY,WASN'T THIS US ?

A little house with three bedrooms,
One bathroom and one car on the street.
A mower that you had to push
To make the grass look neat.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=4

In the kitchen on the wall
We only had one phone,
And no need for recording things,
Someone was always home.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=5

We only had a living room
Where we would congregate,
Unless it was at mealtime
In the kitchen where we ate.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=6

We had no need for family rooms
Or extra rooms to dine.
When meeting as a family
Those two rooms would work out fine.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=7

We only had one TV set
And channels maybe two,
But always there was one of them
With something worth the view.

For snacks we had potato chips
That tasted like a chip..
And if you wanted flavor
There was Lipton's onion dip.

Store-bought snacks were rare because
My mother liked to cook
And nothing can compare to snacks
In Betty Crocker's book.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=8

Weekends were for family trips
Or staying home to play.
We all did things together --
Even go to church to pray.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=9http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=10http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=11http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=12

When we did our weekend trips
Depending on the weather,
No one stayed at home because
We liked to be together.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=13

Sometimes we would separate
To do things on our own,
But we knew where the others were
Without our own cell phone.

Then there were the movies
With your favorite movie star,
And nothing can compare
To watching movies in your car.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=14

Then there were the picnics
At the peak of summer season,
Pack a lunch and find some trees
And never need a reason.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=15http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=16

Get a baseball game together
With all the friends you know,
Have real action playing ball --
And no game video.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=17

Remember when the doctor
Used to be the family friend,
And didn't need insurance
Or a lawyer to defend?

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=18

The way that he took care of you
Or what he had to do,
Because he took an oath and strived
To do the best for you.

Remember going to the store
And shopping casually,
And when you went to pay for it
You used your own money?

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=19http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=20

Nothing that you had to swipe
Or punch in some amount,
And remember when the cashier person
Had to really count?

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=21

The milkman used to go
From door to door,
And it was just a few cents more
Than going to the store.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=22

There was a time when mailed letters
Came right to your door,
Without a lot of junk mail ads
Sent out by every store.

The mailman knew each house by name
And knew where it was sent;
There were not loads of mail addressed
To "present occupant."

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=23

There was a time when just one glance
Was all that it would take,
And you would know the kind of car,
The model and the make.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=24http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=25

They didn't look like turtles
Trying to squeeze out every mile;
They were streamlined, white walls, fins
And really had some style.

One time the music that you played
Whenever you would jive,
Was from a vinyl, big-holed record
Called a forty-five..

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=31

The record player had a post
To keep them all in line
And then the records would drop down
And play one at a time.

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=32

Oh sure, we had our problems then,
Just like we do today
And always we were striving,
Trying for a better way.

Oh, the simple life we lived
Still seems like so much fun,
How can you explain a game,
Just kick the can and run?

http://mail.aol.com/33124-111/aol-1/en-us/mail/get-attachment.aspx?uid=1.27867990&folder=Inbox&partId=33

And why would boys put baseball cards
Between bicycle spokes
And for a nickel, red machines
had little bottled Cokes?

This life seemed so much easier
and slower in some ways.
I love the new technology
but I sure do miss those days.

So time moves on and so do we
and nothing stays the same,
but I sure love to reminisce
and walk down memory lane.

For those of us who did grow up in those "simple times".....they didn't seem so simple then.....only in retrospect.

Sorry for the childhood you might have had, but even though we had no money, worked for several hours a day before and after school to help on the farm, made many gifts, and ate what we grew, those were some of the best and simplest times of my life. I would take them back over all the technology of today in a heartbeat!

Stop making assumptions Viking (though you are awfully good at that) I had as close to an idyllic childhood as I can possibly think of, But I wouldn't say it was simple, just different. I'm sorry your present is so unsatisfying that you would yearn for times past.......

I loved the time I grew up in, and I love the time I am living in now.....sure they are different, but I cannot say that one is better or worse than the other....just different.

I am always amused by those who would go back to "the good old days", someday these times will be the good old days too.....every time is special in it's own way, but I love what this time in my life has to offer!

I wasn't assuming anything. I am glad you had a great childhood. Your previous post just made it sound like it wasn't that great. I am glad you had a near idyllic childhood. And my life right now is really great but I loved the simpler times of the small town country life growing up where we appreciated everything and didn't need electronics to keep us entertained.

Just don't let them take over your life! :)

I always wonder if times seem simpler in the past merely because they were simpler times, or if it's because kids themselves have less responsibility and awareness of what's going on so it seems better...and if adults looking back are doing so selectively, forgetting what was hard and unpleasant...

There are parts of my childhood that I really appreciate and parts that I wish had never happened, and parts of my life now that I really appreciate and parts that I wish I didn't have to deal with, but it's life. My appreciation comes from within myself, not because of, or in spite of, what's happening externally in the world. Whatever I don't like or appreciate, I try to change, not let bother me, or remove myself from - life's too short to stay unhappy, stressed, or angry.

AV8OR - I hear you on that! My kids have to address their instructors in Taekwondo that way, and I'm trying harder to use it more myself as well so as to be a good example. It's such a quick and easy way to express respect and consideration for others.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it. ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is. ~Winston Churchill
