Welcome to our 10th Annual Pick 5 Contest! Back in 2010, it was only a Pick 3 and we had 5 members participate. The fun caught on though and we've been doing it ever since, so we hope you'll join us!
How do you play? Each week you look at the schedule of NFL games and guess who you think will not necessarily win, but beat the spreads on five of the games as chosen by supposed experts.
Pick any 5 games each week. We play against the spread according to the following website:
www.covers.com/odds/football/nfl-spreads.aspx
We use the "Opening Lines" which never change to keep it simple, and we'll get those posted here after they go up on Tuesdays along with the weekly Pick 5 participant standings.
You must make your choices before the games start for it to be counted. This doesn't mean before the first game of the week, but rather whatever games you pick (i.e. if picking the Thursday game, do it by Thursday night before kick-off, the Sunday games by 10:59am, 1:59pm, or 8:19pm, or whenever kick off is for each game, depending upon your time zone). The time stamp is recorded on your post when submitted so sneaking in late won't be an option. Once you post a pick, you are locked into that pick. No changes, and no editing your post to change your pick. Doesn't matter if your whole team comes down with the flu and they don't play, or the starting quarterback gets a hangnail.
If you forget to pick until after the games have started, you are out of luck. No pick = a loss so if you don't pick at all that will be 5 losses you receive for the week.
Post all picks on this thread - this is the official sheet.
Each week we will record a score for each contestant, keeping track of correct/wins, incorrect/losses, and ties. Ties will not matter except in the case of a tie-breaker needed between 2 contestants after the final week (which is the Superbowl). In other words, only correct picks/wins matter.
For those new to picking games, here's an example.
The line is Cincinnati +3 @ Denver. If you pick Cincinnati, you are saying you think they will either win outright, or will lose but by less than 3 points. Basically, you add 3 points to Cincinnati's actual game score, then compare that to the final actual game score of the Broncos. So if the game ended with Cincinnati 17, Denver 21, you add 3 to the Cinti score, which gives you 20, but you lose because that doesn't beat the Broncos score of 21. If, however, the game ended with Cinti 19, Denver 20, then you'd win. If it ended Cincinnati 17, Denver 20, then you'd have a Tie.
If you see Pickum as the spread, it means that the game is essentially at even 50/50 odds - just pick who you think will win, doesn't matter what the final score is.
If you see OFF as the spread, this means they haven't chosen a spread for that game so it's ineligible to choose as one of your picks. If covers.com happens to update it to a spread later in the week and we get it updated here in time, then you may choose that game if you haven't finished making all 5 of your picks yet.
Make sense? Feel free to PM us or post on this thread with questions. Prize: $250 to the My Mountain Town advertiser(s) of your choice, paid in gift certificates.
One other add to the above rules. I will post the opening spreads here. Those are the official spreads from the website, but don't use the website for your picks, use what is posted here on Tuesday mornings. It doesn't matter if you see something else, what I post here is the official spread that will be used to keep score.

For those who want to play, but haven't in the past, I'm posting a test week for the last week of the preseason so you can see how this all work. Won't count towards any records, but just for warmup.

Thanks Renegade! Week 1 is always tough with having to let go of last season's biases on how they did and start fresh with new teams in mind.
