Blue Moon to Light Up Night Sky This Week
by Mike Wall, SPACE.com Senior WriterDate: 27 August 2012

Skywatchers should circle Friday (Aug. 31) on their calendars, for the date offers the last chance to see a so-called "blue moon" for nearly three years.

The moon reaches its full phase at 9:58 a.m. EDT (1358 GMT) Friday, marking the second full moon of August (the previous one occurred Aug. 1). Stargazers won't be able to see two full moons in a single month again until July 2015.

The phrase "once in a blue moon" suggests that the celestial phenomenon is exceedingly rare, but that's not the case. ...Rather, the term has always been associated with an "extra" full moon. Blue moons come along once every 2.7 years on average, and sometimes much more frequently.

"Now, more than ever, the illusions of division threaten our very existence. We all know the truth: more connects us than separates us. But in times of crisis the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers. We must find a way to look after one another as if we were one single tribe.” -King T'Challa, Black Panther

I thought a Blue Moon was what you get when you forget to bring something to sit on when you go ice fishing. Carhart insulated overalls were invented for a reason...

I like the Harvest moon better, especially when it comes up on the eastern horizon and appears to be larger due to orbital changes that bring it closer to the Earth.

Either way, these are wonderful signs that the best season in Colorado is near!

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

No, that involves a Cougar or a Mountain Lion who is only interested in letting you buy her drinks and teasing you all night long.

Don't be hating on Fall. The days are warm enough to start with and evenings are crisp and cool, great for a fire (conditions permitting) and some under the blanket snuggling along with a few warm drinks. The colors of the leafs and the eventual snow top it all off, Fall has to be the best season in Colorado only bested by a Winter with lots of snow!

I'm not a multiple outfit kind of girl - if it's too cool in the morning to start with shorts, I'm in blue jeans the whole day.

It can't SNOW soon enough for me! Besides, the colder weather brings better views of the stars and I enjoy seeing Orion and Cassiopeia in the southeastern sky this time of night.
