Discolored Water in Evergreen Metro Water District

From Evergreen Fire Rescue:
Evergreen Fire Dept. responded to a structure fire this morning and needed to operate a few fire hydrants in the area to control the blaze. As a result this created discolored water in the water distribution network though a wide area (Pine, Elizabeth, Golf, Marshal, Kinickinick, etc). It is not possible at this time for the water district to flush the all of the mains to resolve this issue. Doing so could put crews and public safety in jeopardy and potentially increase the problem. Evergreen Metro District has recieved numerous calls from customers in this area. They are relying on customers to help with the problem and are providing the following advice to all customers affected.

Run COLD WATER ONLY from the largest faucet or tub to begin flushing your service line and water main adjacent to your property.
Do not run hot water as this may introduce the discolored water to your water heater and will take longer to cycle out.

The discoloration is caused by minerals that have precipitated out of the water inside the pipeline (iron/mangenese). The water is safe to use for cleaning, hand washing and toilet use. This does not affect the potability of the water and there is no health risk from consumption.
