Arrowhead Fire quickly contained through unified effort

Conifer, Colo. - On Wednesday, February 8, 2017, at 1:01 p.m. Evergreen Fire Dispatch aired a report of a brush fire burning along US Highway 285 near mile marker 240. Elk Creek Fire Department's first resources arrived at 1:13 p.m. and established command. The initial size up was a wildland fire burning in grass and brush, moving downslope into heavy timber. At least seven structures were potentially threatened.

Northbound US Highway 285 was closed to all but emergency traffic, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders for residences in the area.

Within minutes, firefighting equipment from multiple agencies was arriving on the scene. At the peak of the initial attack, there were 15 firefighting apparatus, fire engines and water tenders, and over 40 firefighters battling the blaze. Elk Creek Fire Department, Evergreen Fire Rescue, Inter-Canyon Fire Department, Platte Canyon Fire Protection District, Indian Hills Fire Rescue, Foothills Fire & Rescue, the US Forest Service, and the Colorado Department of Fire Prevention and Control all committed resources to contain the blaze.

As the fire was brought under control, one lane of northbound US Highway 285 was reopened.

By 5:00 p.m. the Arrowhead Fire was no longer a threat to the community. The fire was fully contained, having burned grass, brush and understory on an estimated 5.9 acres. Thanks to the rapid unified response no structures were damaged, and no injuries were sustained. US Highway 285 was reopened. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office lifted the evacuation order, and residents were allowed to return to their homes.

The community can take comfort in knowing that the fire departments along the 285 Corridor work together, and in concert with, the Colorado Department of Fire Prevention and Control to ensure quick and decisive response to the threat of wildland fire.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Colorado Department of Transportation provided additional support.
