Quick, coordinated response by Elk Creek and Platte Canyon Fire averts potential greater disaster.
At 2:10 p.m. Tuesday, February 14, 2017, Elk Creek Fire Department received a report of a possible structure fire at 13533 South Wamblee Valley Road. Fire Chief Bill McLaughlin was first on scene and reported that the structure at Wamblee Valley Rd. was heavily involved and that the fire was spreading into nearby trees.
Chief McLaughlin ordered a defensive attack on the fire and requested mutual aid from Platte Canyon Fire Department. Elk Creek and Platte Canyon firefighters extinguished the structure fire.
At the same time, Elk Creek wildland firefighters dug fireline and cut down burning trees to contain the fire that had spread into the surrounding forest. Given the current dry condition of forest fuels, the threat of a wildland fire was very great. The prompt, coordinated effort by Elk Creek and Platte Canyon Fire Departments assured that this event would be contained and not pose a threat to surrounding properties.
Unfortunately, the structure was a complete loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
