Writing fractions in a linear format is an online method. I do not remember it ever being such in math books.

Not just an online method, but a computerized method. I've written calculator applications that will solve formulas. They have to be expressed in a single line of text. I view the mathmatician's method of putting everything over or under a big ol' horizontal line on a chalkboard as antiquated.

48/2(9+3)=?

1st rule that has to be followed here is solving within parentheses - the result here being 12.
2nd step would be to solve for the denominator - result here 2*12=24
3rd step solve the fraction 48/24=

Answer is 2.

Those rules are taught in lower grade school classes - 2nd or 3rd grade - at least that's where I learned it.
