My dad never wanted anything to do with reunions or remembrances from WWII (was at D Day in Normandy). He rarely talked about it and then I can count on one hand the funy stories he told and the one thing he mentioned about combat.
I imagine there are a lot of veterans like him. Did it, compartmentalize it, move on with their lives. I suppose they were luckier than those who suffered mentally from it for years. Yes, his was a mental way of dealing with it and from what my mother says, he was very successful in the way he handled it.
