I'd settle for competent. They are all, and will always be, flawed . Let's not forget that they are not King, they have limits.

Beck & Family Harassed During Outdoor Movie Night in NYC Park

As Beck explained, he attended Monday night‘s public showing of Alfred Hitchcock’s “The 39 Steps” with his wife and daughter. During the film, he was ridiculed, had someone “kick a cup” of wine on his wife and on his blanket, and even witnessed another person stand up and yell, “We hate conservatives here!”

“These people were some of the most hateful people I have ever seen,” Beck said. “All I wanted to do is go out on a blanket with my family and have dinner in the afternoon sun and sit around Americans, not like-minded Americans, and just watch a movie in the park. And last night at about‑‑ when the movie was just about over, my wife and I got out because it was hostile.”

When Beck left near the end of the movie, the crowd applauded.

“I don’t know what kind of victory you thought you won,” Beck said on radio in response, and later added, “I swear to you I think if I would have suggested, and I almost did, wow, does anybody have a rope, because there’s a tree here, you could just lynch me. And I think there would have been a couple in the crowd that would have.”

Sometimes we forget the consequences of our own hate speach...it brings out the hate in those around us. We see that every day on message boards...troll in a hateful manner and you will get back hateful responses. It isn't right....but it does seem to be how things are.

What made you bring 'hate speech' into this conversation?

Very good first post "The Bear" and welcome to 285Bound The courthouse is for most politics but this is fine too! :)

I second Reagan as an example.

And this is a good answer too:

chickaree wrote: The right President would represent all American voters, not just his party and donors. He or she would be able to see the big picture, and speak the truth even when it is not popular.

The president should represent the nation's overall best interest and follow the constitution, not some narrow ideology. And balancing the budget would be a nice goal for a change.

If you want to be, press one. If you want not to be, press 2

Republicans are red, democrats are blue, neither of them, gives a flip about you.

I'd vote for Nobody.

The campaign could be "Nobody for President 2012" Couldn't lose with that one! :)

Doesn't 'popular' mean that something would appeal to the majority?

And if a truth is not popular, then it can't represent the majority of American voters.

So, there a contradiction in there.

We've got a president now that claims to represent what we need rather than what we want, and he definitely does not represent me.

I don't see a contradiction. If the President must speak unpopular truths ( like entitlements must be cut and taxes raised rather than the reverse) they must convince the nation of the need for this. The most vogorous interaction between president and citizens should be after the election, not before. I'm tired of Presidents who see themselves as emperors. They are our employee, not our master.

I agree. There is no super hero. Everyone has flaws.

I like a lot about what George Washington stood for. He could of been King, and he was huge in creating our nation. Then again he was very harsh in war by today's standards and had slaves. But we tend to judge by today's standards.

Abraham Lincoln had issues too, but was a great president in most ways.

I grew up thinking Franklin Roosevelt was one of the greatest. Afterall, he got us out of the great depression, won WW II, and was voted in three times. Then I learn about the camps for US citizens of Japanese decent, and how he tried to take over the Supreme Court like a cheap dictator. But again, times were different.

I expected someone to mention Reagan. No surprise there.

If we talk about the last century, who were the most popular presidents? Is that the test? If so, Roosevelt and Reagan (not that he had times as bad as Roosevelt) would be right up there, but for different reasons.

Anyway, I vote "I don't know". lol
