That's tragic. I blame an over-emphasis in our schools on Language Arts skills to the neglect of all else.
If you can't read it's hard to learn much science.
You can hone your reading skills reading science. Oedipus Rex and the Glass Menagerie are good literature, but I'd rather my kid understand basic physics and biology.
