It's 150 bucks for the permit to go out of business in Denver. No kidding!

Do you know why?

It's because a bunch of "small business owners" -- (some oriental rug, and jewelry businesses come to mind) -- were scamming the public with "Going Out Of Business Sale" that never ended, and they never had any intention of "going out of business." In an effort to protect consumers, and to force the businesses to play like adults in the market, they imposed a license fee. You want to "go out of business" multiple times?...It'll cost you $150 each time you do...

Doesn't sound so outrageous to me.

Doesn't anyone find it ironic that we have a poster on this thread complaining on the one hand about how the government is killing him and at the same time bragging that he doesn't pay any taxes to it?

BearMtnHIB, I hate to differ on this point, but Boulder has been one of the most sought-after places to do business in the COUNTRY for many years. Yes, there are extra levels of regulation there, but hate to break it to you, that is part of what makes Boulder a desirable place to live and work and has attracted major talent from around the world to a relatively small city.

I don't think your going to out debate me on Boulder. I lived there for 4 years and know the economy there pretty well. During the boom times- many many high tech companies wanted to be there. I have seen dozens of them move out since then. The initial attraction is the college, my company was a pharmaceutical / nutraceutical research and development company, we were the only manufacturer of a injectable cancer drug called "Taxol" among other things. You might have heard about it back in the 90's.

The city gave us such a rash of crap when we wanted to build a new facility- a 50 million dollar lab and production facility- that the management gave up and purchased land in Weld County just a few miles north of the boulder county line.

We built our second and third facility in Weld County.

The company employed about 450 Master/PHD level micro-biologists, organic and inorganic chemists, and chemical and mechanical engineers in the City of Boulder. By the end of the decade, none were left in Boulder- we all moved to weld county.

Massive companies like IBM and hewlett packard and countless others have moved out- up to Longmont or even up to Weld county. the number of companies leaving has been astounding. Many are still left, the cheap(er) cost of high level skills still makes it profitable for some companies- but many are leaving.

I'd say that the companies that are not leaving are government labs, places like NCAR and other quazu government research labs- and companies that contract direct to government. Those businesses are thriving, while the private sector shrivels up.

I left Boulder because of regulations myself. I wanted to purchase a home - or build one, and after hearing of my co-workers battles with the City and County I made the choice to come back home to Jeffco.

Boulder's residential regulations and restrictions are thickers than the yellow pages. I just wanted out- couldn't keep living there with all the socialists. Boulder has a unique captive economy because of the college and the wave of "new suckers" that move in every year. The City can somewhat "afford" to be wreckless with their policy, and the place will continue to exist, even as the city government tries it's best to destroy it

So there you have it- my experience with the Boulder economy.

Again, not going to argue there aren't lots of regs in Boulder, but the case you make that it is only an employer magnet because of the college doesn't hold water. I got my graduate degree at the University of Illinois in Champaign/Urbana. You trip over uber-smart people in the streets there, yet employers aren't pouring in to the area looking to set up business in spite of a notably pro-business climate there. There is more to the desirability of Boulder than just the college, which as colleges go is at best in the upper 25%, not the upper tier. A lot of it is the quality of life, which is fiercely protected by local leaders and yes, regulations. Yes, some businesses are going to find them not their cup of tea but the fact that new businesses keep coming in IN SPITE of those regulations tells me they don't do nearly as much to "crush" business as you claim.

What you right wing armchair economists fail to understand is that 2/3 of the economy is driven by consumption. Small business doesn't need cash, they need demand for thier product. The middle class consumers are the JOB CREATORS. You right wing lemmings have been duped- Now wake the F up before it's too late

What do you have with a Democrat on one side of you and an attorney on the other side? Empty pockets.

The silent majority will be silent no more.
