McCain refers to 'tea party hobbits,' blasts Bachmann-backed idea
McCain talked about Boehner's plan and quoted the Wall St. Journal piece, which said: "The question now is whether House Republicans are going to help Mr. Boehner achieve significant progress, or in the name of the unachievable, hand Mr. Obama a victory."
McCain continued reading the article: "The idea seems to be that if the House GOP refuses to raise the debt ceiling, a default crisis or gradual government shutdown will ensue and the public will turn en masse against Barack Obama....Then Democrats would have no choice but to pass a balanced budget amendment and reform entitlements, and the tea party hobbits could return to Middle-earth, having defeated Mordor,”...This is the kind of crack political thinking that turned Sharron Angle and Christine O'Donnell into GOP nominees. The reality is the debt limit will be raised one way or another."
amen....sometimes the "old McCain" shines through. I liked the "Old McCain" - even bought his books. The one that overtook his body in 2008 really made me think again about him.
McCain did, at least, have the concept of "mental midgets" vis a vis the "tea party hobbits" right. One of them was out there this morning, (mental giant that he was), saying that he had introduced a bill to LOWER the debt-ceiling...
Do you think we will all look back on this "period" as the time we elected really stupid people and get back to at least electing ones that have an IQ over 90?
And I agree, the real craziness is that these are the same folks that SPENT the damn money already. The Republicans made a huge tactical mistake by interweaving the debt ceiling with the deficit. Two different things entirely. If they keep stalling around, the debt will be higher all by itself with higher interest rates. . . and the Dems are not much smarter. The ones out there talking about "Obama invoking the 14th amendment" are nuts... If Obama did that, acting alone, he would be impeached, and I think, rightly so. Congress controls the purse strings, period. Now, McConnell is talking about a vote to GIVE him the authority to do it - while that should make it constitutional, it is still a set up - then they can say, "See? Obama did it."
I believe it will come down to a simple vote to raise the debt ceiling with no conditions attached and no tea party votes, but it will pass. Then the deficit stuff will be campaign planks for 2012 and the congress once again gets NOTHING done for the next year.
