The purpose of the federal government is to ensure commerce and relations with foreign governments. We only get ourselves into difficulty when we attempt to overlay our principles and morals onto the governments of foreign nations. It is not the purpose of the federal government to second guess how other nations are governed - it is the purpose of the federal government to negotiate commerce agreements with other foreign nations. If we want to truly have smaller, less intrusive government, then we have to stop expecting it to expand our principles to other nations as well. Commerce with all nations, entanglements with none - wasn't this the keystone of foreign policy for most of our history?
